Besides being completely irrelevant and over-all just crappy, looks like Best-Buy's business model is finally failing

Doubt many people will shed tears.

F'N right. Screw you Best Buy!!

I knew this was coming. I think it was Forbs???(Could be wrong) that released a "Companies That Are More than Likely to be out of Business by the end of 2012" ...something like that anyway. Best Buy was number 1. RIM 2nd, Sears 3rd. Although RIM and Sears are Canadian I could care less if they are gone as well. RIM has fallen so behind the curb, and Best Buy' is getting slaughtered by all the internet only sales web sites that sell the exact same crap as then for less, and people dont have to deal with the absolute stupidity you run into with their horribly trained children that know absolutely nothing about anything. Like I said, the Day Best Buy shuts down, I will throw a party in celebration.

I wouldn't be surprised if Future Shop were not far behind them.

They long ago stopped stocking CDs, and now that it seems that people are ditching optical media altogether (ie: Blu-ray), their market share is probably quickly shrinking.

I bet the majority of their sales these days is anything "i".

Yup I agree Dave. Best Buy have launched that Mobile Phone stores now separately from the main Best Buy stores. One just opened in the Mall here in K-Town, and I am guessing that their is ridiculous attempt to try to keep the doors open. Good luck Competing against the big dogs there, they will be crushed.

Future shop Canada will follow but based on the fact that they sell products juuustttt slightly above the "Crap Retail Pooh" market they will probably last a bit longer. But eventually I cant see them lasting either. GOOD!

Sucks that all these stores and other businesses are closing. Not for the sake of the corporations, but a lot of people have lost their jobs and more are on the way, through no fault of their own. But that's a different conversation all together.

Best Buy sells a ton of stuff that people don't associate with them any more (or never did to begin with). Does anyone think of buying these things from Best Buy?...

Appliances - Sears, Home Depot, Lowe's
Vacuums, air conditioners, etc. - Target, Home Depot, etc.
Cell Phones - AT&T or Verison store
Apple computers, peripherals, i-devices - Apple Store
Dell, IBM, etc. computers - company's own website

People are flocking to B&H, Tiger Direct and NewEgg for cameras, memory cards, hard drives, etc.

EB Games has a stranglehold on video games due to used stuff (Best Buy got in on that, but too little too late).

The TV buying craze is over - everyone's already ditched their tube TVs for flat screens, which are dirt cheap nowadays.

Blu-Ray wasn't the next DVD, regarding people replacing their entire library yet again. People are sick of format changes, and even more sick of a bunch of DVDs that don't get played taking up space. Netflix streaming is far more convenient and DVDs through them are far cheaper and don't stay around to take up space.

Their music section is at least 1/10 the size it used to be, and it's impossible to find anything - there's no plastic thing with the artist's name on it organizing and seperating them; everything's on top of each other. Amazon's the first thing most CD buyers think of, and they're cheaper. You can get just about any CD ever pressed, new and/or used.

Their stereo and HT stuff's quality has really gone downhill, even by big-box store standards. I don't see Denon, Onkyo or Pioneer stuff anymore. Their HTIB stuff is atrocious. Lowest end Polk and Boston Acoustics are their best speakers. Most of their stuff is now Insignia and Rocketfish.

Their car audio stuff has equally gone downhill.

I can't figure out what's left that's worth having. My family gives me Best Buy gift cards for my birthday and Christmas, as I'm pretty hard to buy for. I used to buy all my music there, and would pick up other random stuff. I've had about $50 worth since Christmas, and another $50 for about a month. I've been in several times trying to buy anything. Haven't found anything yet. iPod peripherals like headphones, boom boxes and docks are probably the only things they have a decent market share of.

Even their Magnolia section has gone downhill, and that's not in all stores.

I think Circuit City had some very good consumer level stuff - Harman, Denon, better Boston Acoustics and Polk, and Velodyne.

And for the life of me, I can't figure out how FYE is still around! Most of their CDs and DVDs are at least double what Amazon sells for. No idea why people buy music and movies from Barnes & Noble either. They're just as expensive as FYE.

I think stores like Best Buy are going the way of the department store. People don't care to find everything in one store anymore. That's what the Internet is for.

As for people being in the store and looking for cheaper prices on their smartphones, welcome to the technology that you told everyone they needed to have! There's a way for that to be a non-issue - price things low enough. Seeing as how they undercut the mom and pop shops till they went under, what comes around goes around.

Companies like Sony wouldn't (and still don't) allow mom and pop stores to advertise for less than box box stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. They figured bid box stores would move a ton more product than them. They'd rather piss off a guy that sells 50 TVs a year than someone who sells 50,000. It was a great plan at first. Now that they're all folding, how's that working out for them?

Every business has to give their customers what they want, otherwise they'll go somewhere else. If you're not the cheapest, or the most knowledgable, or have the most extensive selection, what exactly are you doing? Going out of business, I guess.

Good post JR. I agree with most everything, and it does suck about the front line people losing their jobs (couldn't care less about the fat-cat head office pukes probably getting a smaller bonus next year).

But, most of the people that work at places like Best Buy, etc. are most likely under-employed anyway, be they students who could probably make more money doing manual labour, or out of work IT workers that should be pulling in way more than 10 dollars anyhow.

Anyway, I could quite possibly have no idea what I'm talking about.

I guess the general consensus is good riddance to big-box electronic stores. I'd rather pay 10% more and buy something from my local brick and mortar. Not that Best Buy or Future Shop have anything I'd really be interested in buying anyway.

Good post JR, I too agree. Does suck about employment loss, but like Dave said most, if not all floor and cashier peeps are usually students simply working there part time to help with School or whatever and should be heading to higher expectations anyway. The management peeps there can eat me. lol. Although I feel bad for anyone losing a job, when they get hit with the realization that their products they were told were the best, actually SUCK A HUGE BAG OF B====D 's I would be lying if I told you that didn't bring a great big smile across my face. ( I am a prick after all ).

Like I said, die Best Buy die. If it means pushing jobs aside to do so, then let the job losses commence. LOL That is horrible to say, but I can live with that, as my hatred for Best Buy trumps it. haha.

The article seems to point mainly towards the US side of things. Not sure how this will affect the Canadian side of things.
Agreed, does suck about job loses.
