Totem MiteAnyone who has ever seen a Totem Sttaf will look at these speakers, and think "that looks like a bookshelf version of the Sttaf".

It ain't.

I picked these up on loan from my local Totem dealer since I was in the market for a new set of monitors. Even the experience with 2 salesman at the same dealer can demonstrate how opinions can vary on this speaker. One salesman said that he would recommend a pair of Mites and a Totem subwoofer over the Sttafs, suggesting the Mites image way better, and have less tonal colourization.  Another guy mentioned that the Mites aren't even close to the quality of the Sttafs (why else would they only be a third of the price?).

I have my own opinion of these speakers. I did not enjoy them. First of all, these are definitely not the "bookshelf version of the Sttafs". The Mites are actually a little narrower and not as deep as the dimensions of the Sttaf. Secondly, the tweeter, while still a soft dome, is definitely not the same kind as in the Sttaf. Finally, from what I can gather, the crossovers aren't even close.

Why didn't I enjoy this speaker? I guess the fact that it was just so small was a definite strike against it. It sounded honky and congested even at low volumes. It did image quite nicely, which is at the top of the list of priorities in a speaker for me, but besides that, this was not a speaker I could with for serious music listening.

Maybe for a small office, desktop type setup it would be ideal. But I'll pass.

Hi, Could you please mention what were the equipment that you used with the totems. The entire setup matching is very important. I own a pair connected to a Kingrex Pre/T20 + HRT Streamer 2 Dac + QED Silver Anniversary cables. The system is as open as it can get. I agree that there are cheaper speakers with better bass reproduction (CA S30). But it is never congested. One more thing the maximum SPL rating is a mere 107 db. You can never expect them to fill any room bigger than a small room and it does not work in open concept living rooms.

Hi, I actually own a pair of Totem Mites. I really like them they are on the bright side, but they produce very little distortion which makes for ours of listening without ear fatigue and revealing at the same time. I'm also a speakers designer (working for company other than totem) so I have actually measured them. For example, they produce lower distortion that B&W 686 which means they have better quality drivers.
