Ascend Sierra-1"The best bookshelf speakers for under $1000 dollars".

There's a review out there on another audio site that makes rather bold statement. I haven't heard every bookshelf under 1000 bucks, so I can't really say if this is true or not, but the Sierra-1's are damned, damned good speakers.

I've owned these now for about 4 years, buying them direct from Ascend Acoustics (ascendacoustics.com) in California. The owner, David Fabrikant is a a pleasure to deal with. He responded to all my queries via email within minutes - late at night on a week night no less.

The speakers arrived within a week, perfectly packaged and double boxed, and even housed in a soft fabric bag to protect the beautiful natural bamboo finish. Did I mention bamboo? Yes, I did. These speakers aren't manufactured out of cheap MDF, they're actually solid bamboo. The speakers definitely pass the knuckle test - solid and inert.

As far as bookshelf speakers go, these are rather large ones. I'm very familar to Totem speakers, so lets compare them to these. They're smaller than the Mani-2's, but a good deal bigger than the Model-1's. They're quite heavy too. Make sure they're solidly blue-tacked onto your (heavy) speaker stands.

How do they sound? I would place them just to the warm side of neutral. They're definitely not warm, mushy speakers, but with a soft dome tweeter they will pair with aggressive gear if need be. The bass from the Sierra's is good. Astounding, actually. For a 5.25" driver, they really kick. Tight, fast, taught bass. I actually found myself thinking a few times that there is a sub in my music room.

Would I recommend the Sierras? Let me put it this way... I originally bought them to do home theatre duty in my living room. I moved them into my "reference" 2 channel music system, and am very happy with they results.

They're THAT good.

Try them.

This review is from: Pioneer SP-BS41-LR 2-way beohskolf speaker pair Having read the good reviews on these speakers on this and other sites, I decided to order a pair. For me, these speakers had one distinct purpose to replace a pair of much-loved Wharfedale Diamonds 10.1 s in my garage before the Phoenix Summer Heat cooks em to death. Well, having hooked these speakers up and after a 36 hour break-in period I can say that they far exceed my expectations: These speakers are very neutral, transparent, and just the right bit laid-back, but still with a good amount of sparkle'. High's are somewhat rolled off, but that suits me just fine because they're not fatiguing. There's plenty of enjoyable, sparkling high's coming from the soft dome tweeters. Mids are crystal clear, if somewhat nasal' in the upper mid range, maybe a crossover at 3200Hz instead of 2500Hz would have been produced a fuller midband? Not sure, and it's not a big deal, mids sound great overall and I'm nitpicking here. Bass is pretty darn phenomenal for a speaker this size, and has to be heard to be believed very well done. All in all these Pioneers sound very much like the Wharfedale's they're replacing, but at roughly one third the cost. I do hope the Pioneers will survive the summer heat in my garage, that will be the ultimate test:) One thing to consider is that all that bass response comes at a price: Reduced speaker sensitivity and impedance, which means you need some good electronics to drive these speakers to sound their best. Bottom line I think Pioneer has a winner here, sure there are certainly better speakers out there, but not at this or twice the price of these. I'm not really a big fan of anything Pioneer, but any company that makes speakers like these at this price point deserves my enthusiastic praise, since they up the competition by bringing the latest audiophile technology and design to a much broader market.
